Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you sell tobacco?

A: No!

The Snuff Taker’s Ephemeris is a magazine about tobacco. We do not sell tobacco. We are not a tobacco store. Please stop asking us for snuff samples, Czech Republican guy.

Q: Why can’t I find The Ephemeris at

my local newsstand or bookstore ?

A: Because we’re not there...   yet.

We’re a small-press, independently produced magazine. While it’s possible that we may hook up with a national distributor in the future, for now we wish to retain 100% creative control over our book. Every distributor that we have talked to so far has wanted to “update” our style in order to fit in better with their other magazines.

Many of us here at the Ephemeris have a background in the zine scene, and while we would love for everyone in the country to be able to easily purchase our book in their local Barnes & Noble, we also know from experience that establishing an identity for your publication is more important than keeping up with the Joneses. So, while we may reevaluate our stance down the road, right now we’re only available at a few stores around the country. When, and if, we ever go “big time,” you’ll be the first to know.

Q: Do you offer subscription services?

A: Not yet.

We’re not set up yet to offer subscriptions, but we will soon. Stay tuned for further development.

Q: How do I contact ___ regarding ___ ?

A: The contact page.

To contact any of our team, please refer to the contact page. It lists email and snail mail addresses for our staff, including submissions and advertising inquiries.

Q: What exactly is an ephemeris?

A: Simply, an “almanac” or “gazette”.

The first ephemerides (the plural form of ephemeris) appeared in Babylonia around 1300 BC. They were astrological catalogues composed of tables and charts used in tracking constellations.

The Greeks adopted the term and expanded its definition to include a wide range of printed matter, including newspapers and collections of poetry. This form of the word is synonymous with what we now commonly call an almanac, gazette, journal or annual.

The title of our magazine is a homage to self-publishing pioneer Tom Dunn’s The Pipe Smoker’s Ephemeris, a newsletter that he produced from 1965-2005.

Q: How do you pronounce “Ephemeris?”

A: However you want!

There are two “accepted” pronunciations according to the major dictionaries: Eff - UH - mEEEr - us  and Ef - FIM - mir - us. We all say it differently, sometimes with hilarious results.

Q: Are you guys affiliated/funded/spun off of another website or by a tobacco manufacturer or shop?

A: Absolutely not.

The Snuff Taker’s Ephemeris is not an extension or byproduct of any internet forum, store, or tobacco manufacturer. We are a completely independent and autonomous entity and we’re not affiliated in any way with any other venture.

You may, however, see the names of our staff pop up all over the web as we all frequent several different forums and such, simply because we love to talk tobacco. Some of our staff writers operate their own well-known snuff/snus sites, and you can find a list of those sites here. We encourage you to check them out and see what’s going on out there in the world of tobacco!

Q: So, who are you guys, and how did you come up with the idea for The Ephemeris ?

A: Nobody special, and quite by accident.

The short version: Mick and Rob met on the Snuscentral forum years back and have been friends ever since. Rob had a dental appointment and tried to find a decent tobacco-themed magazine to take with him for the lobby wait. He couldn’t find one, so he and Mick decided to do a print magazine about smoke-free tobacco. They asked a bunch of writer friends to join in on the fun, and hilarity ensued. Now the Ephemeris is the greatest tobacco publication ever. The End.
